May 23, 2008
The authorities of the Brussels capital region, in collaboration with the European Commission and the city of Brussels, have launched an ambitious competition aimed at defining a new urban design for the European quarter. The perimeter affected by the contest comprises the area around the Rue la Loi, between the inner ring and the Chaussée d'Etterbeek.
The project aims to transform the area into an ecological district in which live the main European and international administrative hub of the region, various types of housing and cultural and leisure spaces. They will thus be evaluated projects that offer public spaces of coexistence, giving priority to non-motorised mobility and public transport, and proposed buildings of high environmental quality and high architectural value.
In addition, the project responds to the desire, jointly formulated by the regional authorities and the European Commission, reorganize the various buildings occupied at the time by the Commission on both sides of Rue la Loi, encouraging at the same time a great functional and social diversity. This renovation project provides for the rationalization and the concentration of the presence of the Commission along the Rue and implies that the Office space occupied by the Commission to the area would increase from 170,000 to 400,000 square meters.
