Biotechnology in Spain entered more than 50 billion in 2010

The Spanish Association of Biocompanies (Asebio) presented on May 10 the Asebio 2010 annual report with the latest data from the biotechnology sector, with the presence of the Minister for science and innovation, Cristina Garmendia.
Among them, it highlights the increase in the turnover of the sector, which reached 53.152 million euros in 2009, 70,9% more over the previous year, according to data from the module of biotechnology of the survey on technological innovation in enterprises 2009 of the National Institute of statistics collected in the 2010 Asebio report.
The number of companies involved in biotechnology-related activities amounted to 1.095 in 2009 with a growth rate of 16.2%. Of them, 399 companies have developed biotechnology as a main or exclusive activity, an increase of 30.8% over the previous year.
Total employment totaled 148.648 employees in 2009, 37.2 per cent more than the previous year and domestic private investment in r & d in biotechnology rose to 485 million euros in 2009, 5.4 per cent more. This figure is more than double the dedicated to r & d in 2005, which reached 201 million euros, which represents the great effort in r & d that are making businesses that use biotechnology in your business.
