abs REPORTS The worldwide lift market The worldwide lift market is expected to exceed $130 billion by 2025, according to a report by Global Market Insights, Inc. highlighting key industry trends. The global construction industry will grow at an average rate of more than 4.5% to reach approximately $12.5 trillion by 2020. China will represent about 19% of this industry by 2020 with a production of more than 2 billion dollars. The Indian construction market will also grow at double-digit rates during this period driven by increased government and foreign investment in infrastructure development. Other countries in the region, such as Indonesia and Vietnam, will also undergo rapid growth in their construction sectors in the coming years. Rising income levels, rising GDP, urbanisation and industrialisation are some of the factors driving the growth of the construction industry in Pacific Asian countries. smart cities is particularly noteworthy, as it encompasses various aspects: from the most basic - such as intelligent lighting that adapts to environmental conditions - to the most sophisticated - such as advanced security systems. The lift, as an essential item for the mobility of people in cities, cannot be left out, especially considering that lifts are the most widely used means of transport in the world. However, while much is heard about it, what exactly is a smart lift? Improved safety, energy efficiency, greater comfort and optimisation of maintenance are some of the keys to this sector. Control panels At a time when everyone is talking about ‘smart’ lifts, it’s no wonder their ‘brains’ - the control panels - are undergoing a crucial stage. Not only do they control all the actions carried out by the lift, but they are also a key element in the achievement of ever more important tasks, such as telemaintenance. If we also consider the international regulatory issues, increasingly demanding in terms of efficiency and safety requirements, the resulting picture is that of a constantly changing sector which, moreover, has to deal with the situation of a market that continues to pose significant challenges in terms of price and ability to adapt to new developments. These rising trends will boost product demand and increase overall lift market growth in the envisaged period. Sustainable and innovative industry In order to face global challenges and plan the industry of the 21st century, in addition to strengthening its capacities and competitiveness, it must move towards production and business models that include eco-innovation and greater social awareness. Climate change, the use of natural resources, the improvement of technological and innovation capacities, training or new jobs, among many other agents of change, are challenges to which industry will necessarily have to respond, bearing in mind that the way it approaches them and the solutions it provides will be crucial not only to its future but also to the societies it serves, which demand fairer and more equitable progress. These are some of the topics addressed in the conference entitled ‘Improving the technological and innovative capacities of industrial sectors’, held on 4 June in Barcelona in the context of the cycle ‘Sustainable Industry, Competitive Industry’ organised by the Club of Rome in Barcelona, together with Obra Social ‘la Caixa’, the Environmental Forum Foundation and Eurecat. 88 - Ascensores y Montacargas
