La elaboración de un diagnóstico previo permite detectar los procesos o instalaciones dónde Winery installations usually have a very high level of energy consumption due to the large quantity of machinery needed to produce wine. Thus, the implementation of energy efficiency measures substantially reduces energy costs. In addition, the vineyard is one crop that is particularly impacted by climate change given that it is highly susceptible to changes in temperature, which can threaten the quality of the wine produced by the wineries. The case of the González Byass wineries in Jerez of the Frontera (Cadiz) is a clear example of the environmental commitment present in this winemaking family since it was founded in 1835. Via the “5+5 Caring for the Planet” initiative and guided by the principle of continuous improvement, González Byass is making the protection of the natural environment a reality via environmentally friendly practices from the vineyard to the winery, guaranteeing sustainable development while combating climate change. To achieve energy efficiency, the wineries have implemented different projects designed by Córdoba-based company, Azul y Verde. Energy Audit To begin with, an initial energy analysis was undertaken at the ‘Las Copas’ and ‘Núcleo Central’ wineries. This prior analysis is able to identify those processes and installations with the highest levels of consumption. A qualitative assessment provides information on the savings potential and degree of investment required to implement the measures. The second step was to undertake energy audits in both wineries on the main energy consumption systems. Such audits involve analysing the energy supplies and production processes; measuring energy consumption and the variables that influence it; drawing up energy accounts; allocating energy consumption to units and processes; analysing and developing the energy efficiency measures along with a costs assessment including a return on investment analysis. ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN SPAIN’S WINE INDUSTRY The Spanishwine industry is a key reference at international level with the country ranked as one of the world’s three leading producers and exporters of wine. Exports have grown fivefold in the last 25 years to make the country the leading global export market. To increase its competitiveness with other countries, many Spanish wineries have decided to implement environmentally friendly strategies. Energy efficiency is a key aspect for this sector as it contributes to sustainable development while bringing down costs. Eficiencia Energética. Sector Terciario | Energy Efficiency.
