Sostenibilidad. Eventos | Sustainability. As with any eco-design project, sustainability in the organisation of events must be taken into account from the design stage. This is the only way to truly minimise the environmental impacts associated with the organisation and execution of the event. Taking care of even the smallest details is essential for any event, and more so when working on the sustainability of events. Several aspects beyond the efficient organisation of the event must be taken into account and knowledge of waste and sustainability is required to ensure that the services or products we acquire are really as sustainable as they claim to be and not just mere slogans. It is important that suppliers can prove their sales messages and assure us that they are not just empty messages. Growing consumer interest in sustainability has generated a wave of “green messages” because “green” sells and more than ever we need to be cautious and meticulous, to be well informed and to ensure that we do not fall into the trap. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, a sustainable event is one designed, organised and implemented in a way that minimises potential negative environmental impacts and leaves a beneficial legacy for the host community and all involved. The organisation of events is influenced by many characteristics, including: space (closed or open), services required for the event, type of event (festival, congress, conference, seminar, meeting, etc.), type of speakers and attendees, time, etc. Based on the premise that no two events are the same (even those held in the same place and at the same time), we cannot apply the modus operandi for the organisation of one event to another event. Exhaustive planning, knowledge of the client and their objectives, attention to every detail, making the event “yours”, are the keys to success. Leaving nothing to chance, but always bearing in mind that unforeseen events that must be controlled will arise, i.e., “planning for the uncontrollable”. The difference between an event that does not take sustainability into account and a sustainable event is that, in the case of the former, you only have to ensure that the needs of the event are covered in a satisfactory way. In the case of sustainable events, in addition to meeting these needs, the environmental impact generated by each service, location or product used to cover that need must be considered. But the challenge is even greater. Green sells and we often encounter messages regarding sustainability bereft of rigour, messages that can confuse us into thinking that we have acted in favour of the environment, when the opposite is the case. We need to be more cautious than ever, very rigorous, know a lot about sustainability and ask for demonstrations to guarantee that the decision we are making is the right one. For example in packaging, if we get carried away with 100% recyclable messages, without requesting a rigorous certificate of recyclability corroborated by physical testing of the packaging in real plants, we will fall into the error of acquiring products or packaging that, even if they are self-proclaimed to be 100% recyclable, will end up in the landfill. This can make the big difference between sustainable events and events that look sustainable but are not.
