The quantity of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment managed through proprietary channels (manufacturers, distributors and local entities) increased by 1.5 million kg in 2020. The rate of compliance with the management requirements of Fraction 1, temperature exchange equipment, such as refrigerators and air conditioning units, rose to 106%, which is of particular importance bearing in mind that this is considered hazardous waste. The Fundación ECOLEC, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the recycling of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), achieved the correct management of 115,820 tonnes of e-waste in 2020, making it the Spain’s only extended producer responsibility (EPR) scheme to correctly manage over 100,000 tonnes of WEEE for four consecutive years. Despite the COVID-19 health crisis, the Fundación ECOLEC maintained its level of activity throughout 2020, in line with Government guidelines whereby, through Royal Decree-Law 10/2020, of 29 March, waste collection, management and treatment was deemed an essential activity. A highlight of 2020 was the fact that ECOLEC increased the quantities of WEEE managed through its proprietary channels (manufacturers, distributors and local entities) by more than 1.5 million kilogrammes compared to 2019, thus meeting one of the challenges set out in its 20202024 strategic plan. Luis Moreno, General Director of the Fundación ECOLEC, believes that this figure “highlights the efforts made during the year of the pandemic to manage and finance the collection of WEEE, enabling better implementation of management criteria such as traceability, the provision of enhanced services to waste producers and optimisation of process control and efficiency”. Moreno also underlined the importance of collecting over 100,000 tonnes for the fourth consecutive year. “In a year as atypical as 2020, citizens, businesses and public authorities reaffirmed their commitment to WEEE recycling and the figures prove it. For our part, we will continue to highlight the imperative need to recycle this waste which, if poorly managed, is particularly hazardous for our environment”. Figures by fraction Royal Decree 110/2015 of 20 February on Waste Electrical ECOLEC SUPERA POR CUARTO AÑO CONSECUTIVO LOS 100 MILLONES DE KILOGRAMOS DE RAEE CORRECTAMENTE GESTIONADOS ECOLEC ACHIEVES CORRECT MANAGEMENT OVER 100 MILLION KILOGRAMMES OF WEEE FOR FOURTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR
