Beneficios para el medio ambiente A nivel medioambiental, la labor de SIGAUS y todos los agentes implicados en el ciclo de vida del aceite industrial: fabricantes, talleAnd this is why SIGAUS has continued to offer full collection coverage to all producers of the hazardous waste that is used industrial oil. In 2019 alone, we served over 70,000 establishments generating used oil in a total of 4,846 municipalities, collecting a gross quantity of almost 160,000 t throughout Spain and regenerating over 73% of this quantity. This is a clear demonstration of commitment to the Circular Economy, and to leaving behind the antiquated “end of life” product concept for the purpose of driving a circular model that prioritises reuse, recycling and recovery of materials in production and consumption processes. In 2019, SIGAUS made possible the net management of a total of 135,600 tonnes of used lubricants throughout Spain, with the support of its 245 member companies, including the 23 new companies that joined last year. Together, these companies placed a total of 298,460 t of lubricating oils on the market, 55% of which was sold to the automotive sector and 44% of which was consumed by the industrial sector. Our work would not be possible without the cooperation of a wide management network (a total of 195 facilities) committed to covering all the processes involved in the management of this waste: collection, transport, analysis and final treatment. Last year, our Information Technology System (ITS) recorded almost 181,000 separate collection operations, supported by official documents, showing that the most frequent collection operation involves only around 200 kg (a standard drum). Environmental benefits On an environmental level, the work of SIGAUS and all the actors involved in the industrial oil lifecycle (manufacturers, workshops, industry, companies, managers…) enabled the recovery of 100% and the regeneration of 73% (97,350 t) of the used oil collected, exceeding the 65% minimum set out in the legislation by 8 percentage points. Moreover, SIGAUS’ work in 2019 was of great benefit in the fight against climate change. The regeneration of used oil for the manufacture of new base oils made it possible to achieve a reduction in CO2 emissions of 65,000 tonnes, compared to emissions associated with producing base oils through oil refining, whilst also preventing the consumption of 29 million barrels of this raw material. 73% OF USED OIL REGENERATED: SIGAUS’ CONTRIBUTION TO THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY IN 2019 Sustainable waste management is one of the essential pillars that must always be guaranteed, regardless of the circumstances. For this reason, the work of Extended Producer Responsibility Systems must be ensured at all times, including in the exceptional situation currently being experienced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even when non-essential activities were forbidden, the activities of waste management systems continued without interruption.
