Itene Foundation discussion on the new challenges of the food packaging
on April 19, 2011
Legislation European, and by extension the Spanish, on materials in contact with food, is updated based on new scientific progress in this area, thus allowing a greater security of the consumer and the progressive elimination of ambiguity and empty legal with which companies are often found. With this aim, recently, the Regulation (EU) has published no. 10/2011 of the Commission, on January 14, 2011, on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food, which will be applicable, in large part, from 1 may of this year.
The workshop will analyse this new regulation, which includes and supersedes all Community legislation on plastics, introducing changes in migration testing, food simulantes and lists of authorised substances, as well as specifically including multi-component and multi-layer materialsignored so far. Given that the competent authorities and the industry must adapt its testing standards to the updated provisions, there will be transition periods which make possible and facilitate this work. The day will include a specific statement on the special requirements of packaging/plastic materials for infants and young children, including information on the dispute and measures recently taken on bisphenol A and the polycarbonate bottles.
It will also address the specific legislation on recycled plastic containers/materials and packaging/materials active and intelligent food applications, whose adaptation is currently in progress, although slowed due to the enormous efforts that require processes of evaluation by the European Agency for food security (EFSA) and the European Commission
The day will focus on changes in European food safety legislation applied to the packaging.
The packaging and packaging technology evolves offering new solutions to the food, related to its quality and service life. Despite the continued need for improvement in the properties of the packaging, remains food security as a starting point for any work in these fields. Good manufacturing practices and the documents that testify, including declarations of conformity, are legal requirements to be discussed at this event.
