Desde principios de la década de 1990, EMT viene haciendo una decidida apuesta por la investigación y el uso de combustibles limpios y poco o nada contaminantes, al objeto de lograr que su ya de por sí pequeño impacto en el medio ambiente de la ciudad de Madrid sea menor aún y se acerque paulatinamente a cero. EMT ha hecho un enorme esfuerzo en los últimos 30 años para lograr un parque móvil poco contaminante, sostenible y más amigable para la calidad del aire de la ciudad de Madrid y lo ha llevado a cabo desde diferentes premisas y enfoques. Desde 1994, año en que se incorporaron a la flota de EMT los primeros autobuses propulsados por Gas Natural Comprimido (GNC), la empresa ha apostado claramente por este sistema como alternativa más limpia al diésel: actualmente, el 67% de la flota (1.400 vehículos) está compuesto por autobuses propulsados por GNC. Desde 2010, EMT también ha incorporado a su flota un pequeño porcentaje de autobuses híbridos, que permiten la utilización de tracción eléctrica, con contaminación atmosférica y acústica cero, en zonas céntricas o zonas de bajas emisiones, ofreciendo a la vez máxima eficiencia energética con mínimas emisiones contaminantes. Si a los autobuses híbridos y propulsados por gas, unimos eléctricos y vehículos diésel que cumplen la normativa Euro V o superior, nos encontramos con que el parque verde (es decir, poco o nada contaminante) de EMT representa el 83% del total de la flota (1.700 autobuses de 2.050). A finales del siglo XX, EMT fue, asimismo, pionera en la realización de ensayos con autobuses propulsados por pila de hidrógeno, por biocombustibles o por bioetanol. En esta segunda década del siglo XXI, la apuesta por un futuro más sostenible se basa en autobuses de propulsión eléctrica. EMT has made a huge effort over the past 30 years to achieve a rolling stock that is clean, sustainable and friendlier for the air quality of the city of Madrid and has done so based on different premises and approaches. Since 1994, the year in which the first buses powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) were incorporated into the fleet, the company has clearly supported this system as the cleanest alternative to diesel. Today, 67% of its fleet (1,400 vehicles) comprises buses powered by CNG. Since 2010, EMT has also incorporated a small percentage of hybrid buses into its fleet that enable the use of electric traction, with zero atmospheric and acoustic pollution, in city centre or low emission zones, while offering maximum energy efficiency with minimal contaminant emissions. If the electric and diesel vehicles that are Euro V standard compliant or higher are added to these hybrid and gaspowered buses, EMT’s green stock (in other words, zero or almost-zero contaminant) accounts for 83% of the total fleet (1,700 buses out of 2,050). At the end of the 20th Century, EMT was also a pioneer in the performance of testing with buses powered by hydrogen fuel cells, biofuels and bioethanol. In this second decade of the 21st Century, the commitment to a more sustainable future is based on electric propulsion. In public urban bus transport, the use of electric vehicles is the only way to guarantee the elimination of local pollutant emissions. In recent years, EMT has undertaken numerous tests with electric buses from different manufacturers. Currently, EMT has a small number of buses and microbuses that run off electricity: 18 electric microbuses, which operate on two routes that run through Madrid’s historic centre (EMT was the first company in Spain to operate routes exclusively with electricallypropelled vehicles); 15 standard electric buses (12 m) incorporated HACIA UNA FLOTA 100% SOSTENIBLE La Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Madrid (EMT), en su habitual línea de vanguardia en materia tecnológica, medioambiental y de compromiso con la sostenibilidad de Madrid, es la empresa de transporte urbano nacional líder en I+D, y es pionera, en el ámbito nacional e internacional, en la participación en proyectos de investigación sobre nuevos autobuses, combustibles limpios y alternativos y sostenibilidad medioambiental.
