Inaugurated in Lleida the first plant of the world that combines solar power and biomass
31 July 2013
Artur Mas he has inaugurated the first installation of solar thermal in the world that combines solar technology and biomass in Les Borges Blanques (Lleida). The President of the Generalitat de Catalunya has highlighted "the courage of the investors of the project" and has referred to his "innovative character which ranks it as a world reference installation".
The commissioning of this plant owned Abantia (47.5%) by pioneer, Comsa Emte (47.5%) and the Institut Català D'energia (5%) represents a revolution in the field of alternative energies, since it offers a continuous 100% renewable power generation. Joan Gummà, President of Termosolar Borges, has insisted that "the hybridization is the future in renewable energy" and stated that "this model of energy production will become a benchmark for the future".
More than 153 million euros and between 150 and 450 people depending on the phase of creation, have been necessary to launch this ambitious project that plans to offer a continuous production of renewable energy of 98.000.000 KWh per year, the equivalent to the average consumption of 27,000 Spanish homes. The production of this type of clean energy represents a saving of 24.500 tons of dioxide of carbon (CO2), amount similar to withdraw from circulation to about 100,000 vehicles a year.
Are currently 40 people are employed in the operation of the plant and about 50 partners to the extraction and transport of biomass. A material of forestry origin that comes from forests that are in an approximate radius of 80 kilometers of the plant. The planned consumption of biomass per year is estimated at 85,000 tons.
According to Manel Molins, director general of the Termosolar Borges: "a great commitment to clean energy are the 96 acres of the thermal power plant. Les Borges Blanques is one of the areas of Catalonia and of the North of Spain with more hours of sunlight. "This allows us to combine two renewable technologies and continue with electricity generation beyond the hours of sunshine, a pioneer in the world".

The hybridization model allows a continuous power generation, resulting in different ways depending on the time of day, the weather and the season of the year. This installation just stops on summer nights, to not exceed the quota for biomass burning that establishes the regulations.
Hours less solar radiation, as well as during the night, energy production is complemented by the installation of biomass, supplied mainly with forest and from biomass energy crops. Natural gas, unlike the rest of solar thermal power plants in the world, is used only as residual resource of support in implementations underway.
This project adds to the wide experience both Abantia and Comsa Emte, have in the field of the promotion and construction of power generation in renewable, and special regime in the fields of treatment of purines with associated cogeneration, biogas, photovoltaics and wind power.
