The school of architecture of Liverpool explores innovative uses of ceramics
on July 5, 2013
From 3 to 12 July, the school of architecture of the University of Liverpool hosts 'Performative Screens' workshop whose objective is to investigate the use of ceramics in systems to block direct sunlight (UV radiation) and distribute light evenly in the Interior. This workshop is framed within the project 'Illuminating Through Ceramics' (illuminating through pottery) developed by the school of architecture of the University of Liverpool, and is part of the activities of the sectoral promotion of Icex Spain, export and Investment Plan in the United Kingdom market, and which collaborate in the commercial Office of Spain in London, and Ascer.
During the two weeks of duration of the workshop, students will work in team to design parts that later must produce. The workshop is coordinated by urban rose, teaching Spanish architect of this academic institution, and with the participation of guest speakers as it is the case of Javier Mira (ITC) that on the opening day, move students multiple and novel applications of ceramic coatings in contemporary architecture.
At the beginning of October 2011, forty-three students from the fourth year of the Master of Architecture began to work on the project ' Illuminating through Ceramics' whose main objective was to develop constructive ways with ceramic that allow through a wide range of technical solutions, better use of natural light sources. The project has combined research, sustainability in building and design, with the challenge of identifying the lighting possibilities of ceramic coverings from the perspective of students.
The Coordinator of the project, the architect urban rose, in the exhibition of the work of the course in the school of Liverpool.
During the course the students have informational material provided by Ascer, samples of parts sent by manufacturers, and theoretical classes taught by specialists in the field. The programme also includes visits by prominent architects and specialists in pottery who approach their knowledge of ceramic coverings in architecture.
Urban rose, Professor of this University, research architect associated with the Instituto Tecnológico de Massachusetts (MIT) and prize thesis in the awards, Ascer ceramics in 2004, has been responsible for coordinating the project.
Collaboration with the school of Liverpool is part of the initiatives included in the network of chairs of ceramics, seeking rapprochement and the complicity between the University and the producer of ceramic tiles sector; creating a virtuous circle resulting in one of the most important principles within the ideology of Ascer: constant innovation. At present, the network of chairs of ceramics includes: the school of architecture (Esarq) of the International University of Catalonia in Barcelona; the school technical Superior of architecture of the University of Alicante; the Polytechnic technical Superior of architecture of the University of Valencia; the Polytechnic technical Superior of architecture of the University of Madrid; and the school of architecture technique of the University Jaume I of Castellón.
Special mention deserves also the Ascer collaboration with three recognized academic institutions: the school of design of the University of Harvard (USA), and the schools of architecture in Darmstadt (Germany) and Liverpool (United Kingdom).
