Giant marine pulleys of nylon casting 6 that last longer
A lifting device installed at the peak of an oil platform in the North Sea has been equipped with giant pulley wheels constructed to riding sandwich between flange of steel segments of wheel of nylon 6 with loads of molybdenum disulfide.
The segments of the pulley of five meters in diameter, or track runner bearings wheels, have been strained by Quadrant Engineering Plastics (Quadrant EPP) in their own material Nylatron GSM, a high performance reinforced caprolactam which reacts to form nylon 6 during the moulding process. Each caster contains eight segments and each segment is almost two meters in length and weighs almost 85 kg.
The dispersion of disulfide of molybdenum (MoS2) acts as a solid lubricant capable of fulfilling their duties under conditions of high pressure and speed. Improves the ability to support loads of nylon 6 and maintains its inherent impact resistance at the same time. The finished product has very high resistance to wear outdoors, so it lasts more than nylon 6 standard, and the smooth and non abrasive nature of the strained parts also lengthens the life of the cable as compared to the casters of steel. In addition, the casters weigh much less.
This lifting device has been built by National Oilwell Varco, world leader in design, manufacture and sale of large-scale mechanical equipment and components used in the drilling and production of oil and gas. Quadrant EPP supplies parts Nylatron GSM through the Norwegian branch of the company's European distribution Vink, ready for mounting on the steel flanges. After casting, Quadrant EPP machines critical areas in their exact dimensions.
It is the second time that Quadrant EPP supplies these parts to Varco.
