Intelligent buses that improve the public transport
14 December 2011
The Centre of Automatic and Robotic, mixed centre of the Upper Council of Scientific Investigations (Csic) and the Polytechnical University of Madrid, have presented the results of the Project Guiade. This initiative has developed a system of positioning and automatic driving of vehicles of public transport, based in the communication between the cars and a regulatory head office that manages the information.
The vehicles developed by the Project Guiade carry a computer and sensory systems and of communications. The sensors provide information to design a stage of driving that allow to situate the vehicles on the maps of the route that wants to follow . The systems of communication allow that the vehicles communicate between them and with the infrastructure, for afterwards act of form coordinated. For this, the study has employed the standard of communication WiMax Interoperable, norm of transmission of data that uses waves of radius and guarantees a flow of safe data.
“Up to now when it arose a problem in the road, like an atasco or an accident, the vehicles enteraban of the incident after an interval of time, when they arrived to the place affected. With this system, the car receives information in real time envoy from other cars, by braked brusque, prolonged arrests, etc.”, explains the researcher of the Csic Teresa of Pedro, of the Centre of Automatic and Robotic.
These mechanisms have been tested during the presentation that took place the past month of December, in which a bus of public transport driven by means of an automatic pilot received information on the unforeseen that arose in the road thanks to the messages that sent another vehicle that circulated a stretch of road by in front of him.
“The system that have presented allows, for example, that when a vehicle detect an atasco, send a message to a station of control, so that this transmits to the other vehicles an order so that they limit the speed. Another possible application is the regulation of the traffic according to a scale of preferences. If an ambulance arrives to a crossing at the same time that other vehicles, can send a signal to the head office of control so that the semaphore that regulates his step put in green, whereas for the other change to the red. Once that has happened the vehicle of emergencies, invests the situation, explains Teresa of Pedro.
“With this work want to endow to our roads and infrastructures of transport of a system with greater capacity, more efficient and sure”, concludes the researcher of the Csic.
The project has explained also with the participation of the University of Alcalá de Henares, the University Rey Juan Carlos and the companies Albentia Systems and Iberian Society of Electrical Constructions.
