UPC students create an innovative low-power lighting system

Míriam Cabanas and Gerard Bertomeu, final year students in the architecture ETS of the Valles of the universitat politècnica de catalunya (UPC), have created a system of intelligent fuzzy light, which concentrates the light activity areas. The design, a professional competition winner, is based on LED technology for low power consumption.
Honeylight, the name of the product developed by Cabanas and Bertomeu, consists of two parts: a cross composed of LED's low consumption that works as a source of light, and another piece with form of paraboloid which disseminates. Thus exploit the parable geometric properties so that the reflection of light is perfect. The result is a diffusing wall of light (screenwall) adaptable to the dimensions and use of space.

The novelty of the system, currently under development, lies in the combination of independent control of the power of each set of LED, that allows to create different light patterns and environments, with the installation of a network of motion sensors. Thus, the intensity of the light automatically adjusts to flows of activity, with the consequent energy savings.
Honeylight is intended to be applied both in vertical facades and walls, as in horizontal, in ceilings, for example in airport terminals, subway stations and public buildings.
The OOVA study, consisting of two students of the UPC, has won with Honeylight the first prize Corian of design 2010 in the professional modality of product design, ahead of the RCR architects and Jesús Monge design finalists. The award ceremony took place on 21 October in the Auditorium of encouragement of Arts and design in Barcelona.
