The Mayor of Barcelona, Jordi Hereu, has already placed the first stone of a power station of biomass in the neighborhood of La Marina. The company Dalkia, company belonging to the Group Veolia Environnement, and its subsidiary Agefred catalana, is responsible for the project called the network Multienergías of South Barcelona, whose purpose is to provide supply of energy "in all the territory corresponding to the area of the Marina and L'Hospitalet"", as well as in areas over growth of Barcelona and its metropolitan area". According to Dalkia, the overall objective of the network, which will include other generation facilities (gas and solar) is "to provide a flexible solution that is capable of providing supply to an area of more than 1.2 million square meters".
The public institutions involved in the project are the municipality of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, the Zona Franca Consortium, the metropolitan environment, Tersa, Enagas, the Institut Català de l' energy (ICAEN) entity, the Institute for diversification and saving of energy (IDAE) and the Barcelona City Council. The biomass plant will provide waste of pruning of the parks and gardens of the city of Barcelona, and constitutes the first phase of the project. According to the company, this biomass energy recovery plant "is one the key pieces of the project".
