Ten countries account for 90% of patents on marine genes, including some present in international waters, "a very appealing figure" if we take into account that these countries have 20% of the coasts of the world. The first three, United States, Germany and Japan, cover 70% of these patents and one of them, Switzerland, does not possess if you want to marine waters. These statistics emerge from a study involving researchers of the High Council for scientific research (CSIC) which is published in the latest issue of the journal Science.
