Wartsila supplied gas engines for two power plants in United States
June 11, 2007
Wartsila has recently achieved two contracts for the supply of gas engines to power Central paths in the United States, with a total of 192 MW.
The first project consists of 116 MW plant owned by Texas electric company Earth Energy. The plant will be installed in Hayward, to Northern California, and will be equipped with 14 engines of the type W20V34SG gas. The plant will be launched in May 2009, and once in operation will sell electricity to the local electric company PG & E (Pacific Gas & Electric Company) under a contract of 20 years. Mr. Marks, President of Earth Energy, says: "Had been chosen Wartsila technology to maximize the performance and flexibility of operation of the plant". "We are happy to offer the benefits of this technology to California".
The second project is a 76 MW plant that will be installed in the town of Hays (Kansas) and will consist of 9 engines of the type W20V34SG gas. The central will be owned by the electric local Midwest Energy, and will begin to produce electricity in September 2008, giving service to approximately 48,000 consumers. "The plant brings a clean and economical solution to electrical demand of our subscribers in rush hours, and will improve the reliability of the service," says Mr. Lehman, general manager of Midwest Energy. The city of Hays is located at an altitude of 660 metres and during the summer the temperature often reach 40 ° C, while winters can be very cold.
The choice of engines Wartsila to these power stations has been due to its low fuel consumption to any load, to the maintenance of its benefits even in extreme environmental conditions of altitude and temperature, to quickly put in place (reaching 25 per cent of cargo in two minutes and 100% charge in 10 minutes), and its flexible response to sudden changes in electrical demand. In addition, its system of closed circuit cooling reduces the consumption of water, a scarce commodity in many parts of the United States.UU.
These two new contracts in California and Kansas, along with the two achieved last year in Nevada and Colorado, rise to four large power plants equipped by Wartsila in the United States.UU. in the past 12 months.
