Repsol YPF and Acciona sign the greater global biodiesel production
March 27, 2006
The President of Repsol YPF, Antonio Brufau and the President of Acciona, José Manuel Entrecanales on 16 March signed an agreement that launches this common project that allows to meet about half of the objective of Spain biofuelsreferred to in the National Plan for renewable energy by 2010. It is estimated that production provided for in this agreement avoid in that year the emission into the atmosphere of about 3 million tonnes of CO2.
The draft provides for the installation of plants for production of biodiesel in the vicinity of the refineries of the Repsol YPF group in Spain, with a capacity exceeding 200,000 tons per year. The agreement also provides for the participation of Acciona in the construction of another plant in Leon, whose development has already begun Repsol YPF. These projects will lead to the creation of some 200 direct jobs and more than 5,000 indirect jobs. It is expected that most of these jobs come from the Spanish agricultural sector, which could be spent between 200,000 and 300,000 hectares of irrigated land to the production of raw materials (rapeseed and sunflower) for the supply of the plants.
The collaboration between the companies in the field of biodiesel has been developed in recent years through an extensive joint work of technological development, which aims to optimize the production and use of biodiesel, and with commercial ties that have given rise to Repsol YPF is already incorporated in the formulation of their automotive diesel the Biodiesel produced by Acciona in its factory of Caparroso in Navarre.
