The director of R&D of Metallic Carbides, invited to present the new industrial applications of the CO2

Metallic Carbides, pertaining to the group Air Products, has participated recently in the 3ª edition of the congress ISHA (International Association Solvotermal and Hidrotermal) where the Dr. Lourdes Vega, director of R&D of Metallic Carbides, speaker invited to the congress, has showed some of the new applications of the CO₂ that already are using to industrial level in Spain and in the world.

The Dr. Vega, director of Matgas, headquarters of the department of R&D of Metallic Carbides, gave the report titled ‘Understanding the CO₂ supercrítico: of the basic knowledge to the industrial applications'. In her, it presented the wide fan of new industrial applications that offers the CO₂ and all his advantages to generate sources of sustainable power, showing some of the new technologies obtained in the project CENIT SOST-CO₂, that cover from the renewable energies from the CO₂ (growth of biomass, generation of biofuels) until his application in the treatment of waters, in conservation of foods, generation of new materials and permanent capture of CO₂. They presented in detail resulted of new materials obtained from the CO₂ to high pressesures (or CO₂ supercrítico) with applications in subjects of medicine, recovery of waste for production of power and carbonatation of ashes to produce cement.

The Project CENIT SOST-CO₂, led by Metallic Carbides and coordinated technically by Matgas, has centred in the research of a sustainable alternative to the geological confinement of the broadcasts of CO₂ by means of new uses of the same. The new industrial utilisations sustainable of the CO₂ from the development of respectful technologies with the environingingment is one of the areas prioritarias of investigation of Metallic Carbides and of Matgas. The activities realised in this field llevar in collaboration with international experts and with final users, with the aim to develop sustainable solutions that adapt to the new needs of the society and of the customers.

According to Lourdes Vega, “the numerous investigations realised have showed us that the CO₂ has a key paper in the research of sustainable resources for the industry and the society, thanks to advantages so important like his ease of handle, the absence of waste after his use in applications to high pressesure, or the fact to treat of a cheap gas, no toxic and no flammable. This experience purchased is the one who allows us turn into industrial applications some of the activities realised in laboratory along these years”.

With the main aim to offer a space where scientific of all the world could share and exchange information on the most recent projects centred in the sustainable uses of the technology hidrotermal and solvotermal, the congress, celebrated in Austin (Texas), has had the participation of numerous universities, centres of investigation and companies of international technological base.
