The EC proposes to change the criteria for aid to agriculture in less-favoured areas
April 1, 2009
Change concernirán to 31 per cent of the agricultural area community, rated as 'zone intermediate disadvantaged', and 7% of farms in the EU, but will not affect mountain areas or islands. The extra payment to the producers in a disadvantaged area of such varies depending on the country and in Spain around the 16 euros per hectare; It is co-financed by the EU and the Member State within the environmental measures for rural development.
The EC wants to when determining 'intermediate less-favoured areas' will stop consider socio-economic criteria because it believed that that there are other European funds and intends to be guided the natural difficulties, such as adverse weather or low yields of the soil. The proposal to be submitted to the EC on 21 April is not legislative because it believed that countries have not yet submitted sufficient data.
