Annual herbaceous plant of American origin.
It is a creeping plant that can reach 10 m in length, its stems are ribbed and rough and sarmentoso appearance with lobed, cordate leaves.
The large, yellow flowers are Unisexual; the male have the soldiers stamens pillar-shaped and in both sexes the Cup is attached to the corolla.
The fruits are oblong and vary greatly in size, depending on the variety. The shell is smooth and hard and also varies in color.
