FY76 - Futur energy

Over the coming decade, around the world, but particularly in Europe, our lives are going to experience an unstoppable electrification process: everything that can be electrified, will be electrified. There is no going back. This is not an ideological movement as some may think. No, it is the urgency of the moment that requires us all, as humanity, to react to the future of the planet and to the real possibility of reducing CO2 emissions by 30% in 2030. And in this new energy paradigm dominated by the electrification of our lives, battery storage will play a fundamental role in practically every vector of our activity: from mobility in any of its variants to industrial production or the management of the power grid itself, which will shortly start to receive thousands of megawatts originating from renewable generation, which is by definition, non-dispatchable energy. Non-dispatchable, of course, without the presence of batteries, because batteries change everything, absolutely everything. 2020: a year of fundamental legislative progress The past year has not been one of major technological advances or of large storage projects. The first steps have started to be taken as regards the launch of pilot projects that, wholly financed by private companies, commence their storage trajectory by testing different technologies for different applications. However, the major advances have generally taken place in the slowest part of the equation. 2020 closes with very encouraging movements on the part of the Government who, via the MITECO, has designed an ambitious, integrated and complex Strategic Storage Plan, which opens the doors to shaping a market that in turn generates multiple markets, with multiple business models and new agents. The provision of services to the transmission and distribution grid, or the consolidation of the aggregated demand of small generation units (with individual installed batteries, we understand), are just some examples. By contrast, and as an example of how the Government often “writes straight in crooked lines”, the recent announcement of the first auction for conferring the Economic Framework for Renewable Energies called for this January, covers the participation of storage as an element that brings dispatchability to renewable generation plants in an inconsistent, confused and disheartening way. AEPIBAL understands that the Government has wanted to share its intentions, to indicate that storage is a reality, on the threshold of the new energy model, but does not want to make the mistake of having storage take part in a model that EN UN MUNDO ELECTRIFICADO, EL ALMACENAMIENTO EN BATERÍAS ES IMPRESCINDIBLE Luis Marquina Presidente de AEPIBAL BATTERY STORAGE IS ESSENTIAL IN AN ELECTRIFIED WORLD Luis Marquina, Chair of AEPIBAL, the Spanish Batteries and Energy Storage Business Association
