Desde 1851, nuestra empresa pública ha sido testigo de la historia de Madrid, de su crecimiento, de sus dificultades, de sus éxitos, y, en general, de todos los acontecimientos que han marcado su historia. No cabe duda de que la historia reciente de Madrid, y, por tanto, de Canal, no puede escribirse sin hacer referencia a dos asuntos que condicionaron nuestra actividad en 2021: COVID y Filomena. La pandemia por COVID-19 llegó a 2021 sin ser ya una sorpresa, pero no por ello dejó de marcar desde el primero hasta el último de los días del año. En relación con el coronavirus, y más allá de continuar con los esfuerzos emprendidos desde el inicio de la pandemia para garantizar nuestro servicio y proteger la salud de los profesionales de nuestra empresa, Canal se ha convertido en un referente de innovación, servicio público, colaboración entre instituciones y excelencia en su trabajo. Hablamos del Sistema Vigía, puesto en marcha en julio de 2020 para monitorizar y cuantificar la presencia de ARN de SARS-CoV-2 en las aguas residuales de la Comunidad de Madrid. Ya a los pocos meses de su puesta en marcha, al comenzar la segunda ola, se vio cómo efectivamente anticipaba los datos de contagios con gran precisión. Durante 2021 y lo que llevamos de 2022 hemos podido comprobar cómo, subida a subida y bajada a bajada, Vigía ha demostrado ser una herramienta de enorme precisión y, por tanto, con una innegable utilidad para el seguimiento epidemiológico de la población. El sistema es único, tanto por la población abarcada, los casi siete millones de personas que habitan en la Comunidad de Madrid, como por frecuencia de muestreo, por puntos de control y por tratamiento estadístico. Vigía ha despertado el interés de instituciones como las Naciones Unidas o la Unión Europea; de eventos médicos como el World Pandemics Forum; de decenas de medios de comunicación nacionales e internacionales; de delegaciones internacionales; de publicaciones científicas… y lo ha hecho por la excelencia en su desarrollo y su inmenso valor como herramienta de salud pública. De hecho, uno de los retos más interesantes que se plantean para este año es la colaboración con Sedapal, el operador de agua potable y alcantarillado de la capital peruana para desarrollar un sistema de vigilancia del SARS-CoV-2 en aguas residuales en Lima y Callao, donde vivenmás de 9millones de personas. Nuestra propuesta Canal de Isabel II celebrated its 170th anniversary last year. Since 1851, our publicly owned company has been a witness to the history of Madrid, its growth, its difficulties, its successes, and, in general, all the events that have marked its history. There is no doubt that the recent history of Madrid, and therefore of Canal, cannot be written without referring to two issues that conditioned our activity in 2021: COVID and Storm Filomena. The COVID-19 pandemic was no longer a surprise as we entered 2021, but that did not stop it from impacting the year from the first day to the last. In relation to the coronavirus, in addition to continuing with the efforts undertaken since the beginning of the pandemic to guarantee our service and protect the health of our professionals, Canal has become a benchmark for innovation, public service, collaboration between institutions and excellence in its work. We are referring to the Vigía System, launched in July 2020 to monitor and quantify the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the wastewater of the Autonomous Community of Madrid. Just a few months after its implementation, at the beginning of the second wave, it proved its capacity to forecast infection data with great accuracy. During 2021 and thus far in 2022, we have been able to see how, rise by rise and fall by fall of infection rates, Vigía has proved to be a tool of enormous precision and, therefore, undeniably useful for the epidemiological monitoring of the population. The system is unique, both in terms of the population covered, the almost seven million people living in the Autonomous Community of Madrid, and in terms of sampling frequency, control points and the processing of statistics. Vigía has aroused the interest of institutions such as the United Nations and the European Union; of medical events such as the World Pandemics Forum; of dozens of national and international media; of international delegations; of scientific publications... and it has done so due to the excellence of its development and its immense value as a public health tool. In fact, one of the most interesting challenges planned for this year is a project to develop a surveillance system for SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater in Lima and Callao, where more than 9 million people live. This project will be carried out in collaboration with Sedapal, the drinking water and sewerage utility of the Peruvian capital. Our proposal was selected out of nearly 150 projects to be implemented under the EU-WOP program, a collaborative initiative between water operators, led by UN-Habitat’s Global Water Operators’ Partnerships Alliance (GWOPA) and funded by the European Commission DEVCO. In addition to advising on this project, we will also collaborate with Sedapal in another of our most notable lines of expertise: the fight against the consequences of climate change through water reclamation, and we will also share experiences and best practices in water and environmental management.
