Gestión y tratamiento de agua | Water management and treatment www.futurenviro.es | Noviembre-Diciembre November-December 2021 63 ADAPTaRES es un proyecto de cooperación transnacional que comenzó hace 5 años y que ha trabajado promoviendo un uso eficiente del agua y su reutilización para la adaptación al Cambio Climático y la mitigación de sus efectos en la región de la Macaronesia, en los archipiélagos de Canarias, Cabo Verde y Madeira. En este tiempo, instituciones de las tres regiones han trabajado conjuntamente en torno a 3 ejes principales. Por un lado la sensibilización, concienciación, e información a la ciudadanía sobre el cambio climático y sus efectos concretos sobre el territorio en cuestión; por otro el análisis de los contaminantes emergentes en las aguas residuales, así como el desarrollo de sistemas de control de calidad para la reutilización de este tipo de aguas; y por otro en la instalación de parcelas demostrativas y diseño de planes experimentales que lleven al terreno el conocimiento obtenido durante este tiempo, además del lanzamiento de un código de buenas prácticas para el uso de aguas regeneradas en la agricultura. Los beneficiarios finales de un proyecto como ADAPTaRES es la población general de estos archipiélagos. Más de 165000 personas se han visto beneficiadas directamente gracias a las medidas de prevención de la sequía impulsadas en el marco del proyecto, con más de 50 entidades públicas y privadas implicadas y un total de 430 hectáreas en las que se ha intervenido para prevenir las cada vez más frecuentes sequías que se producen a consecuencia del cambio climático. “Cabo Verde, que es el archipiélago más árido y con una carencia estructural de recursos hídricos, ha estado sufriendo sequías recurrentes de más de 5 años y la oportunidad que ofrecen las tecnologías de depuración abre un camino para poder adaptarse al Cambio Climático”afirma GilbertoMartel, coordinador del proyecto y técnico del Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias, institución que ha encabezado el consorcio de socios de ADAPTaRES. La educación y sensibilización como ejes para adaptarse al nuevo paradigma climático Para que estas tecnologías continúen su implantación y su desarrollo en los archipiélagos de la Macaronesia, gran parte de los esfuerzos ADAPTaRES is a transnational cooperation project that started 5 years ago. The ultimate beneficiaries of a project such as ADAPTaRES are the general population of these archipelagos. More than 165,000 people have directly benefited thanks to the drought prevention measures promoted within the framework of the project. Education and awareness-raising as the cornerstones of adapting to the new climate paradigm To enable these technologies to continue to be implemented and developed in the archipelagos of Macaronesia, much of the work carried out in this five-year period has focused on campaigns and specific actions to raise awareness and train both the general population and specialised personnel. ADAPTaRES has developed different educational materials with the goal of reaching as many people as possible. A series of tools have been developed with the expert support of the participating institutions to encourage participation in climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. Comics, board games and online games, the animated series “La Escuela del Agua” (“TheWater School”) and a series of educational worksheets are some of the products that have brought the younger population closer to this issue and enabled them to participate themselves, by raising awareness on issues of water use. The content is in both Spanish and Portuguese and, in addition to distribution in educational centres in the archipelagos, these materials are also available in different libraries on the islands and, for the entire population, on the internet.
