En el año 2015 se inició la revisión del BREF (BAT References o “documentos de referencias MTD”), la normativa base para establecer las autorizaciones en las plantas de incineración de residuos, como la PVE de Sant Adrià. La normativa entrará en vigor en 2023 y obligará a reducir el límite de emisiones de óxido de nitrógeno (NOx) a 150 mg/Nm3 para las plantas de valorización energética ya existentes. En consecuencia, la instalación del innovador sistema catalítico permite a la compañía dar un paso más, disponer de la última tecnología del mercado y avanzarse a esta nueva normativa europea, alcanzando límites muy inferiores a los que marcará en un futuro.
