The implementation of smart systems and artificial intelligence (AI) to address these challenges is a key driver of change and adaptation. This special issue is dedicated to Smart Water and the most innovative solutions and technologies for the water sector: Big Data, Digital Twins, Internet of Things (IoT) and smart metering solutions. We also have information, articles and success stories related to energy efficiency, upgrading of equipment, pumps and valves, and emerging pollutants. Water sector professionals are informing us of their increasing demand for simpler and more customised solutions to monitor, control and optimise their assets anywhere, anytime, from any device, and we hope this issue will be a helpful reference guide in this respect. Following the most recent meeting of the College of Commissioners, the European Commission has acknowledged the significant progress made by Spain in recent years in the collection and treatment of urban wastewater prior to discharge into the environment. As a result, the Commission has withdrawn 274 of the urban areas from the list of 606 areas reported in 2015 for deficiencies in the collection and treatment of wastewater. On 9 June, the Commission sent a complementary reasoned opinion to Spain regarding the urban areas that have yet to comply with the rules. We now have two months in which to respond and take the necessary measures. Otherwise, the Commission may refer the case to the European Court of Justice. We have no time to lose. Para afrontar esos retos, la aplicación de sistemas inteligentes y metodologías de inteligencia artificial (IA) se convierte en un factor fundamental de cambio y adaptación. En este número contamos con un especial dedicado a Smart Water y a las soluciones y tecnologías más innovadoras para el sector del agua: Big Data, gemelos digitales, internet de las cosas (IoT) y soluciones inteligentes de medida y telelectura (smart metering). Además contamos con información, artículos y casos de éxito relacionados con la eficiencia energética y la renovación de equipos, bombas, válvulas y contaminantes emergentes. Los profesionales del sector del agua nos hacen saber que exigen cada vez formas más sencillas y personalizadas de supervisar, controlar y optimizar sus activos en cualquier lugar, en cualquier momento y desde cualquier dispositivo; y esperamos que este número les sea de gran ayuda, un referente y guía de consulta. Recientemente, la Comisión Europea, tras la última reunión del Colegio de Comisarios, ha reconocido los importantes avances de España durante estos últimos años en materia de recogida y tratamiento de aguas residuales urbanas antes de su vertido al medio ambiente. En este sentido, la Comisión ha retirado 274 aglomeraciones urbanas de las 606 que fueron denunciadas en el año 2015 por deficiencias en la recogida y la depuración de las aguas residuales. La Comisión enviaba el pasado 9 de junio un dictamen motivado complementario a España en relación con las aglomeraciones que siguen sin cumplir la normativa. Ahora disponemos de dos meses para responder y adoptar las medidas necesarias. De lo contrario, la Comisión podría remitir el asunto al Tribunal de Justicia. Nos tenemos que poner las pilas.
