El Pacto Verde Without going any further, over twenty packaging items have received our Recyclability Certificate, with the corresponding explanations of the real recyclability of the packaging and proposals for its improvement. But, to date, only one has dared to publicly reveal the real recyclability of their packaging, while the supermarket shelves are infested with empty, false “100% recyclable” slogans. The fact is, as Victoria Ferrer, CEO at the Catalan Recovery Guild, points out, “there are many experts in sustainability but very few really know the process of recycling packaging”. This is resulting in an increase in the amount of packaging claiming to be “100% recyclable” and a decrease in packaging that is really recyclable. Knowing the theory is easy but coming out onto centre stage and breaking through the barriers in order to discover the reality is the complicated part. At Dríade Soluciones Medioambientales, we carry out evaluations and make proposals for the improvement of packaging based on pure reality: the streams and recycling processes for each piece of packaging. Moreover, with the scientific support of the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF, and the experience and guarantee of the Catalan Recovery Guild (a member of EuRIC and BIR), we have developed our Recyclability Certificate and Label precisely so that companies can know, improve and demonstrate the real recyclability of their packaging, taking account not only of the materials used but also the available technologies implemented in practice for correctly recycling them. With the certificate, they will know the quality and quantity of the recycled material obtained, thus gaining a global vision of the product and its integration in a truly circular system. The final issuing of the certificate is audited by SGS International Certification Services Ibérica, S. A. U. Our methods are based on real tests and not on theoretical recyclability. Because using recyclable materials in the manufacture of packaging does not necessarily mean that they are going to be recycled in the real world, particularly if there are design deficiencies. Not everyone realises that the presence of unremovable labels, certain inks and multi-layer packaging and coatings drastically reduces the real recyclability of packaging, to give but a few examples. Nearing 100% recyclability is the responsibility of all producers but no packaging, in the form it reaches the consumer, is really 100% recyclable. The 98% achieved by Ocean52 is one of the highest recyclability ratings that can be achieved in reality and certifies that their aluminium cans are sorted effectively at material recovery facilities and recycled for conversion into new packaging or other aluminium products, without suffering degradation in the process. Achieving these values implies thinking conscientiously about all elements of which the packaging is composed and the behaviour of these elements during the recycling processes. It cannot be forgotten that the recyclability of a packaging material is not the sum of the recyclability of its components but depends on the interaction of these components in the recycling process. Horizon Europe 2030 If you are amongst those who think that the planet will be able to solve matters by itself, we have bad news: Europe thinks the opposite. The European Green Deal is the plan that has been put into operation by the Commission to clean up the economy in the coming years.
