The quality specification of recovered materials in treatment plants is determined by efficiency or purity, meaning that the target materials are mixed with other materials in different proportions. The presence of unsuitable materials mixed with the product reduces profits as recyclers are obliged to carry out further sorting prior to the final recycling process. Why does this happen? The quality of the sorted product is mainly the result of the automatic sorting process. Automatic equipment uses a force to drag the product into a hopper or onto a conveyor belt. The force may take the form of an Eddy Current, an electromagnetic force or an air jet, which affects both the target material and other material in close proximity to it. Operators wishing to improve the quality of recovered cardboard, plastics and metals are obliged to implement manual sorting booths, either for negative separation of unwanted material or positive separation of the target material. This obviously increases operating costs, whilst improving quality and increasing the price obtained for the material. The conclusion is that the implementation of a force to separate waste ensures a certain degree of efficiency but never provides totally clean sorting. It is the human process of seeing and separating the target material that ensures complete sorting, and this is the process we adopted when designing the ICR-Eco. Occupational safety Waste commercialisation was greatly affected on March 13, 2020 by the coronavirus pandemic. ICR-ECO, THE ROBOT THAT EMULATES THE HUMAN SORTING PROCESS Ecocidi Recursos, a company specialising in the management and commercialisation ofwaste, in collaborationwith Inversiones JR Robótica, the international integrator and partner for high-tech sensor systems and robotic capture, presented ICR-Eco at EVERII 2020. ICR-Eco is a modular identification and robotic capture platform that can be adapted tomeet the needs of any waste sorting and recycling process.
