Adaptation to maintain service Last March, within the context of the current health crisis, waste management was declared an essential service by the Government. The foundations administered by Recyclia demonstrated their capacity to adapt their organisation and infrastructures almost immediately to the circumstances, adopting the preventive measures established by the health authorities to guarantee the service and protect workers. There has been a general decrease throughout Europe in the volume of electronic equipment collected, mainly due to reduced citizen mobility. Moreover, many local authorities in Spain closed their municipal selective collection centres. Despite this, Recyclia continued to keep its logistic network and onsite plant management in operation in order to deal with e-waste and endof-life battery streams. In fact, Recyclia’s foundations attended to over 800 weekly requests for the removal of e-waste and batteries during the state of emergency. Since the declaration of the state of emergency, the foundation managing the most requests was Ecoasimelec (responsible for the collection of all types of equipment, frommobile telephones to medical scanners) with 37.9% of the total, followed by Ecofimática (office equipment and printers) with 28.4% and Ecopilas with 21,2%.With respect to printer consumables and light fittings, the requests received by the Tragatóner/Tragatinta initiative and the Ecolum foundation accounted for 7.3% and 5.2% of the total respectively. Information, awareness and, now, rewards too The goal of Recyclia is to facilitate waste management for all those involved in the recycling chain: citizens, municipal entities, companies, distribution channels and waste managers. For this reason, it invests effort and resources in proprietary communications and awareness campaigns, as well as campaigns held in collaboration with other entities and institutions. The results are very significant in terms of citizen participation and quantities of waste managed. The finest examples of this are the actions associated with education in the area of ecofriendly habits and awareness of the importance of segregated collection of domestic batteries carried out by the Ecopilas foundation in the context of both amateur and professional sports events. 2020 saw the tenth anniversary of collaboration in this area. Finally, it should be pointed out that Recyclia has promoted the first initiative in Spain to reward users for their contribution to the reuse and recycling of obsolete electronic equipment. This pilot test, which will be based on smart containers and is due to begin officially this year in the Basque municipality of Getxo, has already carried out preliminary testing of a reward system for the collection of Tablets and other small ICT equipment.
