All these leachate streams, along with those generated in the landfill cells, flow into a pond of 4,455 m3, excavated on the grounds and waterproofed by means of a one-metre layer of compacted clay, bentonite, geotextile and a 2-mm layer of HDPE. The pond has a roughly quadrangular shape, with dimensions of 48.75 m x 45,70 m. It has a surface area of 2,280 m2. The leachate is pumped from the pond to the treatment plant, where it undergoes two-stage reverse osmosis. Prior to entering the osmosis module, the leachate undergoes physicochemical treatment. The clarified leachate is stored in tanks of 100 m3, which serve as buffer tanks to feed the reverse osmosis plant. The permeate from the RO process is stored and reused for the maintenance of green areas and the cleaning of buildings at the CTR. The leachate treatment plant has a capacity of over 35,000 m3 per annum and operates at approximately 75% -80% of that capacity. Odour emissions Both GIRSA and the CTR operator periodically carry out independent studies to evaluate the effects of odours from the CTR on the surrounding areas. The emissions and dispersion analyses carried out in the course of these studies coincide in identifying the leachate pond as one of the priority areas requiring action, as can be seen from the following tables of results. In percentage terms, the leachate pond is one of the main sources of both odour emissions and the concentration of specific pollutants. Therefore, in this new stage of the operation of the CTR, FCC MEDIO AMBIENTE took the decision to install the Hexacover® Floating Cover on the leachate pond in order to reduce odours and emissions. Description of the Hexacover® Floating Cover The fundamental design concept of the HexaCover® Floating Cover, and what makes it unique and exceptional, is that it is constructed as a hexagon with symmetrical ribs on both sides securing an automatic, rapid, uniform distribution over the liquid surface. Hexa-Cover® is manufactured using recycled, UVresistant polypropylene with a relative density of 0.5 kg/l. Hexa-Cover® is the perfect solution to control: • Evaporation • Organic growth • Emissions • Odours • Heat loss • Unwanted birds Fuente de olor Emision Emision de olor Odour source Emissions Odour emissions fosos de entrada | Reception pits 7,2(1) 0,5 Emisiones fugitivas de la nave de Pretratamiento Emissions from pretreatment building 350 24,6 Biofiltro de compostaje | Composting biofilter 17,9 1,3 Prensa de rechazo | Reject baling press 1,05 0,1 Celda de rechazo 2, en explotación Landfill cell 2, in operation 257,8 18,1 Celda 1, clausurada | Cell 1, closed 17,9 1,3 Balsa de lixiviados | Leachate pond 322,4 22,6 Pozos captacion biogas | LFG collection wells 69,1 4,9 Total 1.424 100,0 Tabla 1.
