Internal cement mortar coating for wastewater Cement mortar coatings are the most widely used for the conveyance of wastewater by ductile iron pipes. However, for the conveyance of these aggressive effluents, aluminous cements are used. These cements offer better resistances, including greater resistance to abrasion and wear. The latter is of vital importance because the presence of effluents with suspended solids is very common in these types of pipes (sewerage pipes). The application system is exactly the same as that used for drinking water pipes. The UNE EN 598:2008 Standard (Ductile iron pipes, fittings, accessories and joints for sewerage applications) sets out the specifications for these types of coatings. Special coatings There are cases which might require special coatings without the limitations established for internal coatings that we have looked at. These are passive coatings which, by isolating the pipe from any contact with the effluent, enable them to be used for the conveyance of any material. The two types of special coatings currently applied to ductile iron pipes both have a polymeric composition: - Internal polyurethane coatings. The application on the inner surface of a sand-coloured polyurethane layer with a thickness than can range from 800 microns to 1.6 mm, depending on the diameter and end use of the pipe. This is a high-performance coating, with adhesion values of over 8 MPa and elongation at break values of over 10%. The high degree of resistance to extremely acidic or alkaline waters enables the conveyance of any water with pH values of between 1 and 13. - Polyethylene-derived internal coatings. The DUCTAN internal coating applied to Saint-Gobain PAM’s Blutop and Topaz ductile iron pipe ranges improves the performance of pipes of smaller diameter, reducing their weight and increasing tolerance to aggressive effluents. DUCTAN is more flexible and resistant than the polyurethane coating described previously, with elongation values of over 400% and adhesion values of over 14 MPa. DUCTAN provides resistance to extremely acidic or alkaline waters, thus enabling the conveyance of water with pH values of between 1 and 10. Due to their polymeric nature, both coatings improve on the roughness values of cement mortar coatings, with values of 0.005 for polyurethane coatings and 0.0018 for pipes coated with DUCTAN.
