www.futurenviro.es FuturEnviro | Diciembre 2019-Enero 2020 December 2019-January 2020 29 A fondo: Análisis 2019 | In depth: Analysis of 2019 Hace dos años y medio comenzó la actividad de TheCircularLab, de Ecoembes, como primer centro de innovación europeo especializado en Economía Circular y Reciclaje de Envases, con el doble objetivo de trabajar en soluciones de envases más sostenibles y hacer más eficiente el sistema de gestión de residuos. La estrategia de innovación del centro se basa en un sistema de innovación abierta, que reúne a los agentes implicados en sus 4 líneas estratégicas de trabajo. La primera de ellas cubre la primera parte de la vida del envase, su diseño, fabricación y comercialización, mediante el ecodiseño, con medidas para reducir su impacto ambiental, nuevos materiales más reciclables y desarrollos que aseguren una segunda vida del material reciclado. En esta línea, un equipo de especialistas, trabaja en colaboración con empresas envasadoras, fabricantes de envases y materiales, junto con centros tecnológicos, empresas desarrolladoras y start-ups. La segunda línea se centra en trabajar con el ciudadano, mediante ciencia ciudadana, para desarrollar herramientas y nuevos modelos que permitan un sistema más transparente y participativo en el reciclaje de los envases, fomentando el consumo responsable y la colaboración ciudadana. La tercera, es la gestión de residuos, incorporando tecnología (smart waste) en el fin de vida del envase para su reciclaje mediante la recogida selectiva y separación de diferentes fracciones de materiales en plantas de selección, que se pueden reintroducir como materia prima reciclada para formar nuevos envases u otros productos a través de empresas recicladoras que los transforman, diseñan y fabrican. En esta línea las administraciones tienen un papel importante, en especial la local, como entidades responsables de la gestión de residuos en cada municipio y el tejido de empresas privadas recicladoras. De forma transversal a las anteriores, existe una cuarta línea, dedicada al emprendimiento, permite a Ecoembes, a través de TheCirEcoembes’ TheCircularLab began operating two and a half years ago and is Europe’s first innovation centre to specialise in the Circular Economy and the recycling of waste packaging. The centre has the dual objective of working on more sustainable packaging solutions and making the waste management systemmore efficient. The centre’s open innovation strategy brings together actors involved in 4 strategic lines of work. The first line covers the beginning of the packaging lifecycle, including design, manufacture and marketing. Through ecodesign, this stage features measures to reduce environmental impact, increase the use of new more recyclable materials and promote developments that ensure a second life for the recycled materials. In this first line of work, a group of specialists work in collaboration with packaging companies, and manufacturers of packaging materials, as well as technology centres, companies and start-ups. The second line of work focuses on citizen science, with a view to developing tools and new models to facilitate a more transparent, participative packaging recycling system, whilst fostering responsible consumption and citizen cooperation. The third line is the incorporation of technology (smart waste) into the management of end-of-life packaging so that it can be recycled through selective collection and separation of the different material fractions at sorting plants. In this way, it can be reintroduced into production systems as recycled raw material to produce new packaging or other products, through the work of recycling companies that process, design and manufacture the materials. Public authorities, particularly local authorities, play an important role in this line, as the entities responsible for waste management. So too do private recycling companies. In a manner transversal to the other lines, the fourth line of work is dedicated to entrepreneurship. This line enables Ecoembes, through TheCircularLab, to generate economic activity and jobs by bringing many of the results of the projects carried out at the innovation centre to the marketplace. Apart from being economically feasible, these projects are required to have a positive social and environmental impact, and to guarantee the transition from the linear model of use and disposal to a Circular Economy, which is the central objective of the centre.
