Antiscalant is dosed to prevent the potential precipitation of salts in the membranes due to the higher concentration of elements in the reject of the RO. Static mixers are used to provide the required mixing. Reverse osmosis The RO system has been designed as the final water treatment stage in order to achieve the required product water quality. When the salinity is lower than 400ppm, no salinity reduction is required and the UF membrane system is the only membrane treatment required. When salinity is above 400ppm, the reverse osmosis system operates to reduce the product water salinity to the required value of 400ppm. The feedwater to the RO membranes partially bypasses the RO system and is blended with the RO permeate. The main objective is to reduce the inflow to RO and therefore only increase the pressure to that part of the flow directly entering the membranes. This results in lower energy consumption. The salinity of the blended product from the RO process (RO permeate and bypass flow) is at all times below the required product water salinity of 400ppm. The RO racks have two stages and the first stage brine reject is the feedwater to the second stage. This ensures the highest possible conversion rate and reduces overall energy consumption. Waste and sludge treatment The different processes that make up the main process line have secondary flows from the new water treatment plant (phase 2) and also some flows from the existing water treatment plant (phase 1): • Backwash water from the BAF units (phase 2) • Backwash water from the UF membranes (phase 2) • Backwash water from self-cleaning filters (phase 2). • Backwash water from the BAF units (phase 1) • Backwash water from UF/MF and RO CIP (phase 1) The floated sludge from the DAF units (phase 2), which has a concentration of 4%, is sent directly to the thickened sludge tank. Silo storage Cake storage is provided for at least three days of production in worst case conditions. In order to achieve this specification, silos with a total capacity of 900 m3 are installed. The dry sludge is pumped into the silos by four pumps, one per centrifuge.
