We constantly speak of the importance of Reuse, Repair and Recycling as key ingredients of sustainability, but I personally like to include another “R”, for Recommendation. It is also important to know, share and make visible the activities that contribute to generating more ecofriendly models. With this objective, the Fashion Revolution movement was created following the terrible collapse of the Rana Plaza building in Dhaka Bangladesh in 2012, where 1,138 people working in the fast fashion industry died. Fashion Revolution was the springboard for the creation of the “Slow Fashion Next” platform at national level. Fashion Revolution is a leader at both national and international level in exposing the malpractices of the fast fashion industry, and above all, in giving visibility to sustainable fashion brands and the contribution they make to the environment. This is the objective of Fashion RevolutionWeek, which features a number of activities such as clothes swaps, flashmoves, open day workshops, etc. A few years ago, Slow Fashion Next, which promotes the Fashion Revolution movement in Spain, created a directory of sustainable brands to showcase proposals that suit all tastes. The range of clothes on offer is becoming wider and wider, from brands such as Ternua, which creates sportswear based on marine waste and recycled materials, and is currently exploring the use of food industry waste to dye garments, to brands like ekomodo, which designs accessories in such a way that each component is recyclable and can be reconverted into another accessory. There are many other sustainable brands and we can even find garment hire services. To satiate the need to wear different clothes or find garments and cuts that we like and that really suit us, there are options such as Ecodicta, which offers a monthly clothes exchange service in return for a monthly subscription. I believe that with all our efforts, we have the opportunity to create a better world through our consumption habits. As Gema Gómez, Director of Slow Fashion Next, one of Spain’s greatest promoters of sustainable fashion, points out, every time we buy, we are voting for the world in which we wish to live and the environment we would like to flourish.
