UE | EU Los eurodiputados aprobaron el 12 de febrero las normas para impulsar la reutilización del agua en el riego agrícola y evitar la escasez de agua, así como proteger las fuentes de agua dulce. El crecimiento demográfico, la urbanización y el turismo contribuyen a la escasez de agua y a la sequía en muchas zonas de Europa, en concreto en la región del Mediterráneo. Los recursos hídricos están sometidos a estrés y esta situación tiende a empeorar debido al cambio climático. Según un estudio de la Comisión Europea, en 2030, la mitad de las cuencas de los ríos europeos podrían sufrir escasez de agua. Los eurodiputados votaron el 12 de febrero una propuesta sobre la reutilización del agua para proteger los suministros europeos de agua dulce. Las nuevas reglas tienen como objetivo promover el uso de aguas residuales tratadas para el riego agrícola, que representa aproximadamente lamitad del agua que se usa anualmente en la UE. El aumento de la reutilización del agua en la agricultura podría ayudar a reducir el estrés hídrico en un 5% anual. Water scarcity is a growing problem in Europe.
