Abengoa will develop the first desalination plant in Ghana
May 02, 2011
The plant, which represents an investment of $ 115 million and will be able to produce 60,000 cubic metres per day, is a step in the improvement of hydraulic facilities for the supply of drinking water in the country, whose population is experiencing strong growth. Its capital, Accra, has a population of three million inhabitants, and currently there are difficulties to meet the demand of the nearby villages, which is why this desalination plant will provide supplies to nearby, Teshie Nungua, item.
The new desalination plant will be developed in the form of design, construction, operation and maintenance, property and possible transfer (DBOT, as its acronym in English). The agreement also includes the development of the necessary infrastructure for the abstraction of seawater, the implementation of the system of pre-treatment by ultrafiltration with proprietary technology, with reverse osmosis desalination, currently the newest technique, and the efficient use of solutions to recover energy, among others. Abengoa is responsible for the operation during a period of 25 years from the entry into operation.
This plant has a great acceptance from the Ghanaian authorities to the local population, for the sustainability of the project and for improvements in the quality of life for the inhabitants of the region. In addition, this agreement is the first project of desalination that Abengoa is going to develop in the country and also in West Africa.
With this new project, Abengoa increases its capacity installed desalination of water, already over 1.3 million cubic metres per day, enough to supply drinking water to eight million people. Thus Abengoa contributes with its technology to solve the serious problem of a shortage of drinking water in many countries around the world, at the same time promoting the overall development of all of them.
