7 Pablo y Mayaya The chic touch in uniforms and image wear Pablo and Mayaya are designers from Valla- dolid, and make up the creative team that has known how to attract attention, initially in haute couture accessories but now also in uniforms and image wear. For it is evident that comfort and esthetics are their seal. Their hats are chosen by high-society and royal personalities while their uniforms con- tribute distinction to a company’s corporate image. The creative talent of these designers knows how to adapt to the various settings, with elegance ever playing a major role. Our interview begins with the inevitable question. How was this creative partnership born to combine the talents of Pablo and Mayaya? When did you start working together? We studied fashion design, twenty four years ago. And after graduating we sought a field of specialization and focused on accessories, mainly hats. It seems to be that was our path at the time. We continued to study and train, and in 1990 we created our haute cou- ture business, making hats and head acces- sories. You are well known for your hats, but your name is now also often mentioned in the field of corporate wear. Do you work in other fashion areas? Yes.We do.We make clothes to measure, and also work in product packaging, and as stylists and personal shoppers. We co- llaborate in national and international fas- hion shows and also create corporate image wear, so closely related to profes- sional wear. Cava Most Doré, Sweppes, Brasería Poniente, fashion shows by Ion Fiz, Schelesser, Andrés Sardá, María Escoté, are among the labels and companies we have worked with. What should corporate wear reflect, in addition to a good, well-groomed image? on the visual message the clothes need to reflect. Do you like to add special details? Which ones? We prefer original details that will stand out, and elements that are not the usual ones, as a plus. Details like a hat, or a head accessory, will stand out. And colours are also very important for they represent and identify the company at first sight. For women, the length of skir ts is also impor- tant, as is the concept when designing dresses. Materials, of course, need to be superior in quality for this will determine if clothes are comfor table and employees will feel at ease while working. We want them to feel great, for then they’ll be in a good mood. What is the business line you would like to design for? We have a number of favourites: hotels, sports, like the Tennis Open in Madrid, museums, libraries, or others like AVE, and orchestras would also be great. There is so much to explore! So much we can give! When designing clothes and accessories, we want them to set trends, even if they also have to reflect a business idea. For that will mean employees and workers will want to wear their uniforms. What are Pablo and Mayaya’s future pro- jects? We will continue to work in our coming collection of hats. That’s our day-to-day occupation. We also have several projects, and among them, there are major shop- ping malls and a hotel chain we cannot yet let you know about. In the first place it is indispensable to have it reflect the an employee is in contact with others, they will be the image of the company, and their uniforms will say a lot about it. company’s values. Whenever Whenever you design corporate wear, where do you start? The colour? The spi- rit or concept of the company? The shape, details, accessories...? The initial challenge is to reflect the com- pany’s spirit. We must know in detail if the image is to be modern or classic, aggres- sive or soft, young or mature, contempo- rary or timeless...that is to say, we focus Design Zone JOBWEAR 66
