Fruit set is the transition of the ovary of the ower to a developing fruit, and happens a few days after ower anthesis. In citrus, the ovary begins its development after ower pollination and ovule fertilization or, in its absence, through parthenocarpy. After fruit set, fruits begin the rst phase of their development, during which a high percentage of them abscise, in a process called physiological fruit drop or June drop (Figure 1). Thus, the onset of fruit development takes place from fruit set to the end of the physiological fruit drop. It is characterized by a rapid fruit growth caused by cell division, in which carbohydrates are consumed in the processes of DNA duplication and cytokinesis. Due to competition between the developing ovaries, those better situated in the tree (in shoots with young leaves) have a better nutritional and hormonal status and, therefore, set in a higher proportion. The competition for carbohydrates is the main cause of fruit drop. Gibberellins are the most important hormones during fruit set, cytokinins, auxins, abscisic acid and ethylene also being involved. The greater the capacity of each variety to synthesize gibberellins in the ovary the greater is its capacity for growth and, therefore, for parthenocarpic fruit set.
