LPrevention’s leadership eadership in Prevention is a concept that has been put into -Lead by example. Being under observation, the manager is often circulation, is invoked by many, but there are not many people considered a role model, which requires much consistency. who have a deep knowledge of it, and even fewer ones apply this -Team spirit. The work is collaborative: a good boss knows when to concept in their daily work. delegate certain responsibilities. What is leadership in prevention? We invite our audience to read the article,on the inside pages, entitled“Liderazgo en seguridad y excelencia operativa... el futuro perfecto”, where the pro le of what would be the ideal leadership in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is laid out. To summarize, we quote some of the recommendations of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA), or what is the same some of the fundamental duties of the leaders: -Leaders must take seriously their responsibility for safety and health. -They are meant to create a safety culture in their organizations. -They must obtain the commitment of middle management and senior management. -They must ensure that policies are applied consistently. -They must provide adequate resources for OSH. -They must learn from the good practices of others. Leadership in prevention, which is not a matter that can be improvised or put up overnight, requires basic talents of leaders, abilities that are oriented undoubtedly to pursuit the excellence. The basic qualities of a leader include skills such as: -Communication. An executive should know how to convey the company strategy, so he must be clear and concise. The information ow cannot be unilateral, must also admit the return. -Motivation. The leader spurs his “troops”, inspires and encourages enthusiasm. -Recognizing and encouraging talent. It entails valuing the skills of employees, capitalizing them for the company. -Empathy. The leader cannot be distant, but ‘step into the shoes’ of others and connect. -To admit errors. Erring is human. It is not a leader who is not able to accept the error and show responsiveness. -Establish (realistic) goals and expectations. The unattainable goals only cause demotivation among collaborators. -Auto-Re ection. Before judging others, the leader must know their strengths and weaknesses (Know yourself). -Authenticity. Not worth the fakes or concealment of personality that generate distrust. The manager must nd his leadership style and be consistent with it. We give a resounding yes to leadership in prevention, urging companies to change the theoretical discourse -social and politically correct- by action, an action committed and ambitious about outcome. Theorizing and the declaration of intent with regard to prevention leadership are outdated positions. 6
