International Conference on the sector of textile coatings and laminates (TCL) In mid-November, was held in Valencia the International Conference on Coated and Laminated Textiles (TCL), the only global congress dedicated to the sector of textile coatings and laminates. The meeting, held annually, propitiated the presentation of 18 papers, organized in three sessions: Industry, materials, processes and equipment, and emerging technologies. Dr. Ariadna Detrell, cluster manager of Agrupació d’Empreses Innovadores Tèxtils, participated in the first session with her conference “The European coating and laminating industry”. The conference featured, among other issues, the industry trends in Europe. Also presented the conclusions drawn from the study of the sector considering the five forces from the model of Michael Porter, among which we find: -Threat of new entrants. Massive entry of new competitors from emerging economies and developing countries. There are no technological barriers, commodity or investment costs. The main barrier to entry is product differentiation, increased environmental considerations into process and product, and brand. -Negotiating power of providers. It takes into account input from providers to consumers or product differentiation by providers. -Negotiating power of customers. In apparel (sport and protection), concentrated and multinational clients with great bargaining power; in car industry and other transport, high bargaining power. -Threat of substitution products. Non-textile substitution products for clothing are not foreseen. Generally, the products have life cycles longer than those that are influenced by fashion. In textile architecture, coatings are replaced by membranes. As to products, PVC is replaced for more ecological products. In laminates, powder adhesives are nearly totally replaced by hot-melt ones. -Rivalry among competitors. In a competitive environment, growth in various application areas of laminated fabrics for protection, sport and leisure is higher than the average in industry fashion. Product differentiation by brand (membrane) and price. Leitat Technological Centre participated in the third session (Emerging Technologies) with the lecture "Introduction of biocides into coated fabrics - A study of insect repellent and insecticide coatings for textile applications", by Helena Esteve, a researcher at the Division of Textile Technologies Department of R&D. The speaker explained the technology of micro-encapsulation of biocides against insect in coating fabrics. 101
