Major companies in the protective clothing sector, according to this report, include: 3M Company, Alpha Pro Tech Ltd, Ansell Healthcare Products LLC, Avon-ISI, Bartel- sRieger Atemschutztechnik GmbH & Co, Bekina NV, Björnkläder AB, Drägerwerk AG & Co, Eurodress GmbH, Interspiro, Gateway Safety Inc, Honeywell Life Safety, Jallatte Group, JSP Ltd., Kimberly-Clark Professional, Latchways Plc, Kwintet AB, Mine Safety Appliances Company, Moldex- Metric Inc, Pacific Helmets (NZ) Ltd, Respire Ltd., Saf-T-Gard International Inc., Sioen Industries NV, Skylotec GmbH, Scott Health & Safety, Sperian Protection, Wells Lamont Industry Group, and Z &V Group among others. Europe and the United States make up the largest share in global PPE markets, in terms of both production and consump- tion, covering about 70% of the total. Asian markets are positioned as the sec- ond largest, with a market share of 27%, and it is expected that emerging markets in India, China and Vietnam reach 112.3 million US dollars by 2015. Europe leads PPE production rankings According to information by Euratex and the European Safety Federation, Europe and the Americas as a whole represent the largest share of global PPE markets, about 67%, fol- lowed by Asia, with 27% (see Chart 1) It is important to point out that in the EU alone, some 200,000 jobs are related to the personal protective equipment industry sector. Invoicing totals for PPE exceed 8 billion Euros, and a third part of it corre- sponds to EU states. A significant fact revealing the importance of this industry sector in the EU is that maintenance alone, for PPE, workwear and health protection equipment, represents invoicing totals of about 1.5 and 2 billion Euros, giving jobs to some 35,000 to 40,000 persons. Protective wear: 7.7 billion US dollars by 2015 Within this PPE market segment, protec- tive workwear is a major actor and it is expected that world markets for protective clothing will reach 7.7 billion US dollars (approximately 5.8 billion Euros) by 2015. This represents 23.12 % of the global PPE sector. Major companies in the protective clothing sector, include: Alexandra PLC, Asa- tex, Bennett Safetywear, Cosalt PLC, DuPont, Eurodress, ILC Dover, Kimberly Clark, Kwintet, Lakeland Industries, Mine Safety Appliances Company, Sioen Indus- tries, Sperian Protection Group, Trelleborg Protective Products, Workrite Uniform, and W. L. Gore & Associates, among others. Europe, the United States and Japan make up the largest share in global markets, cov- ering about 70%. Current demand levels are now affected by loss of jobs in the chemical, heavy and manufacturing industry sectors. However, moderate growth is to be expected. The thermal pro- tective clothing markets in the Asia-Pacific area will probably experiment fast growth, to reach 408.7 million US dollars in 2012. It is significant to point out that China and India, in addi- tion to being the world’s most populated countries, have a large number of workers that are not protected in terms of safety at work, so there is a huge potential for future growth in this area. Today’s sce- nario in Asian countries, currently the hub of global manufacturing, is surely point- ing to the protective clothing sector as the one offering the greater possibilities for growth, the report informs Brazil is a particular case, for in 2010 the market for protective clothing grew by eleven percent, reaching a total of 294 mil- lion US dollars. Brazil’s Gross Internal Product grows at rates ranging from 5 to 6 %, and in addition to this, construction works for the World Cup in 2014 and Olympic Games in 2016 will surely gener- ate demand levels expected to exceed 730 million US dollars.
