New Outlast research laboratory in Germany The company strengthens its position in the PCM market (Phase Change Materials), by opening a new laboratory in Heidenheim, Germany. “We want to invest in the future and in research”, stated Martin Bentz, General Direc- tor of Outlast Europe GMBH, who feels that due to the rise in demand levels the existing laboratory located in Boulder (Colorado, USA), might not be enough. Outlast has installed and supplied laboratory equipment and invested in a larger staff. “Research and product development are two essential sectors in our company”, said Martin Bentz. “Of course, we hold numerous patents, for we are leaders in the marketplace, but we also need not to remain stag- nant in this strategic advantage and continue to work with enthusiasm and energy. We continuously study new products, processes, or PCMs, and with this new laboratory it will be easier to work faster on new developments”. “It is fantastic to wake up with an idea and get samples and facts on your desk by noon or later that same day”, stated Volker Schuster, Research and Development Director of Outlast Europe, who feels very happy about the new flexibility the new lab gives his team. Up until now, all lab work had to be carried out in Outlast’s laboratory in Boulder, Colorado, USA. Given the growing number of users and the rise in demand levels, the company’s abi- lity to respond with new developments was certainly limited but as of today, new PCM application processes will be more efficiently shown to clients and users, in a cost-effective, time-saving way, as tests will be carried out earlier and faster. The new laboratory will enable Outlast Europe to fully reach its research potential and test products, another priority with this company. Multiple pos- sibilities mean tests results will be available much sooner, thus translating into improved customer service. The DSC (Differential Scanning Calori- metry) testing instrument leaves a distinctive print that will help determine the Outlast technology to be included in each product, and the correspon- ding levels. “These tests help us show Outlast’s temperature-regulation properties, in an accurate, fast way”, states Volker Schuster. “We can also answer vital ques- tions about the right levels of PCM, resistance to washing, melting or crys- tallization temperatures, heat capacity and much more. The success and applicability of a new development will be easily identified by means of these tests. There are tests for all new developments, but also for produc- tion controls for fabrics and end products. DSC testing in an indispensable, inseparable companion when developing new processes and new PCMs. The new laboratory will also make it possible to carry out a number of qua- lity controls and tests on fabrics, such as washing, strength tests, etc. “Los sectores de investigación y desarrollo de producto son esenciales para nosotros” EPI: Matriales, maquinaria y técnicas para su fabricación/ PPE: Materials, machinery and techniques for their production
