Esperanza Rico Directora La acción climática internacional entra en una nueva fase Naciones Unidas marcó la entrada en vigor del Acuerdo de París sobre Cambio Climático este 4 de noviembre de 2016. Más de cincuenta países ratificaron este Acuerdo en menos de 10 meses. En octubre, el Acuerdo de París alcanzó el umbral requerido para entrar en vigor: la ratificación por parte de 55 países que sumaran el 55% de las emisiones globales. El pasado 7 de noviembre, comenzó la Conferencia de las Partes en la Convención Marco de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Cambio Climático (COP22) en Marruecos, para lograr una política global de reducción de emisiones de carbono. En declaración oficial, Salaheddine Mezouar, Presidente de la COP22, acerca de los resultados de las elecciones presidenciales de los Estados Unidos, felicitó a Donald Trump y destacó como ahora, después de la entrada en vigor del Acuerdo de París, todos los países, junto con los gobiernos y actores no estatales, han de asumir la responsabilidad compartida de continuar los progresos conseguidos hasta la fecha. El cambio climático trasciende a la política y atañe a la conservación del planeta en el que todos vivimos y se deben respetar los compromisos, dentro del marco del esfuerzo común. El respeto y conservación del medio ambiente es cosa de todos y ha de estar incluido en la política de todos los países como aspecto vital y primordial. Parafraseando al Dr. Guy McPherson: “Si de verdad crees que el medio ambiente es menos importante que la economía, trata de aguantar la respiración mientras cuentas tu dinero”. International action on climate change enters a new phase The United Nations brought the Paris Agreement on Climate Change into force on 4 November 2016. Over 50 countries have endorsed the agreement in less than 10 months and in October of this year the threshold required for the agreement to come into force was reached, i.e., its ratification by 55 countries that account for 55% of global emissions. On 7 November, the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22) opened in Morocco, with the goal of achieving a global policy on the reduction of carbon emissions. In an official statement following the announcement of the results of the US presidential elections, Salaheddine Mezouar, President of the COP22, congratulated Donald Trump and pointed out that now that the Paris Agreement has entered into force, all countries, along with sub-national governments and non-state actors, have the shared responsibility to continue the great progress achieved to date. Climate change transcends politics and concerns the preservation of the planet on which we all live. The COP22 president emphasised that all parties must respect the commitments they have given within the framework of this collective effort. Environmental respect and conservation is a crucial priority issue for all of us and must have a central place in the policies of every country. To quote Dr. Guy McPherson: “If you really think that the economy is more important than the environment, try holding your breath while you count your money”.
