I do not know if we are moving towards a certain degree of deglobalisation but we are certainly moving towards less external dependency and greater self-sufficiency in the production of basic products. In the case of the paper sector, had we not been able to guarantee the supply of hygiene and cleaning products, as well as packaging for essential products (food, beverages, medicines…), there would have been a serious logistical problem and a generalised shortage that could have given rise to an enormous social crisis. A clear example is provided by the panic stockpiling of toilet paper. In Spain, we were capable of maintaining supply efficiently, whereas in other countries, there were restrictions and even rationing of the product. We were capable of preventing shortages due to the fact that the Spanish paper industry has a complete production and distribution chain located in close proximity to the markets. The Spanish paper industry, with 10 pulp mills and 69 paper mills, produces a very balanced mix of paper types, including all the varieties required for a very diverse range of paper products. We manufacture papers for both corrugated and cartonboard, which is used to produce different types of packaging required for the transportation and marketing of all types of goods. We also produce paper for large bags or sacks (cement, pet food…), paper for commercial bags, paper and board for tubes, moulded pulp products, etc. For personal and healthcare purposes, we produce tissue paper, which is used in personal hygiene products (toilet paper, sanitary towels, nappies, handkerchiefs…), domestic products (kitchen rolls, napkins, table cloths…), and healthcare and industrial cleaning products. We manufacture graphic papers for the printing of newspapers, magazines, books, leaflets, posters and for writing (writing pads, notebooks…). And we also produce an infinity of special papers for very diverse applications: self-adhesive papers, filter paper, aluminium foil laminated paper, security paper… These are unquestionably essential products that make our daily lives easier, in areas as diverse as communication, culture, education, health, hygiene, transport and commerce. PAPER INDUSTRY COMMITTED TO SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC RECONSTRUCTION If anything has been made clear by COVID-19, it is the importance of having a powerful sustainable local industry, with complete value chains in close proximity to prevent shortages of basic products, particularly in situations such as those created by the pandemic.
