I would say that there have been two major lines in the evolution of LED. On one side the color: gradually adding new LEDs capable of delivering new colors, from red to violet, covering the colors of the visible spectrum, making it possible to generate pure white light. On the other hand, LEDs have been increasing their effectiveness, which is, transforming more energy into light and less heat, thus allowing its use in more and more applications, with greater energy savings and with less design constraints. What is the current implemen- tation of the LED in the field of lighting? Is it the lighting system of the future? The LED is already a reality. The conti- nued decrease in the technology price, coupled with the improvements that have been incorporated in terms of product range and efficiency, is acce- lerating its market penetration, both in professional (more advanced) and in household applications. Taking as an example the case of Spain, in 2011 the declared profit by the leading manufacturers of lighting in traditional lighting products decreased by 3.6% respect to the previous year (dissembled by the increase of exports) while in LED products, that profit do- ubled to 2010. Globally speaking, it is expected that the growth in sales of LED products up to 2016 will be about 5% per year, reaching 45% of turnover in general lighting, and by 2020 it is estimated that 70% of product sales will be LED lighting. .
