Besides six Prizes to the Merit and seven Prizes to the Excellence, the IALD has granted this 2012 two spe- cial mentions to projects and lighting emphasized. One of these mentions was for the successful transfor- mation of the Polyclinical Novamed of Zagreb, Croatia, of Skira LTD. Fifteen award winners re- presenting architectural lighting design projects from seven countries comprise the winners of the 29th Annual IALD International Lighting Design Awards, recognized at a presentation held 10 May at the Renaissance Hotel in Las Vegas, NV USA. Of the 15 projects recognized, two entries earned Special Citations, seven earned Awards of Merit and six earned Awards of Excellence. In Novamed Polyclinic of Zagreb, Croatia, in addition to its practical functions, such as increasing security and providing visual comfort, lighting has another important task—creating emotions. The idea in this project was to create a space that is fun and dynamic, colorful and inviting, with ever-changing scenes of light CRÉDItOs to comfort patients. In the entrance and reception space, an organically shaped channel winds through the ceiling. The inspiration for this con- toured channel came from a picture of brain cells in a local newspaper. Transforming the basic image of these cells into a lighted curve linear organic form was a challenge to pre- sent to the client, and to build and integrate as well. ■
