The first elec- tric lighting with incandescent lamps in a boat was on the MV Colombo in 1883. After almost 130 years it is time to replace this technology, still present and inefficient, with new technologies among which the LED is prominent, and matches the special requirements on board. T he basic requirements in modern shipbuilding are that lighting consumes as little as possible and long-lasting performance to reduce main- tenance costs, but also have to meet other needs. Products have to be small and light- weight, to take up as little space as possible and reduce the overall weight to a minimum. It is also important that the lamps and equipment generate as little heat as possible, so that they can reduce air conditioning costs and the risk of fire in the false ceilings. On the other hand, they have to pay attention to the aesthe- tic requirements, providing solutions for architects and designers. This includes dynamic effects of color, intensity regulation or other control functions to create suitable envi- ronments for passengers. We know the influence of illumi- nation when shopping, for example. In OSRAM we bet for LED as a clear solution to all these needs, not only marine lighting industry, but virtually all lighting applications. The lighting department in the shipbuilding industry, OSRAM LIGHTING MARINE DEPARTMENT, cooperates closely with the Technical Universities of Berlin and Hamburg to achieve set groundwork between the lighting industry and shipping companies and to establish a scientific basis for improved efficiency in ships.
