The light reflected from the facade provides a sufficient lighting level and increases the subjective feeling of safety along the pedestrian path loca- ted next to the cathedral’s southern facade. This path used to be too dark at night and it was therefore regularly avoided as a pedestrian route. The whole process of the illumination of the cathedral was permanently con- trolled and supervised by Directorate for Cultural Heritage (Riksantikvaren). Riksantikvaren evaluated the results of lighting mock-ups, reviewed the conceptual proposals and confirmed all technical details prior to the insta- llation. As the cathedral was decided to be the visual focus in the area, the light level on the square next to the cathedral (Domkirkeplassen) is designed to be very low. The light on the square co- mes from a row of traditional Stavan- ger luminaries (supplied by light from the shop windows) and it is restricted to the northern side of the square (op- posite the cathedral). The concept for Kongsgård (the School Yard) is based solely on illumination of the vertical surfaces such as the flanking facades and the support stone wall on the northern side of the Kongs- gård. The illuminated facades and wall frame the space visually whilst the lit tree trunks in the alley create rhythm and attraction in the space. On the other hand, the trees that stayed dark are perceived as silhouettes in front of the bright vertical surfaces. Such an approach underlines the depth in
