Images/Fotos: ETI In the last few years we have seen in many means of communication, and in many occasions with more political than scientific purposes, the apparently endless advantages of the LED technology: energy saving, more efficiency, more endurance, almost free of maintenance, etc. However, it is necessary to refine some of these aspects that can lead to confusion or misunderstandings. W ith the present technology, it is not pos- sible to state that LED’s have a greater lighting power than the conventional chandelier lightings (100-150 lm/W of a LED vs. 115-200 lm/W of the HID lamps). The most efficient LED’s are those with cold temperature colours (6000 u 8000K) producing an uncomfortable visual sensation and a poor colour range, besides the photo biological risk they involve. With 4000k (neutral white) a performance of 130 lm/w is obtained. These are theoretical values, provided by the LED manu- facturer under ‘ideal’ conditions (IF=350 mA, Tj=25 oC). The LED efficiency diminished with the power supply (IF) and the joint temperature (Tj), so in real working conditions, the efficiency diminishes (107 lm/W to 600 mA and 76o C). In additions to all this we have to take into account the losses introduced by the electronic converter, secondary optics, glasses of the lighting, protective covers of the unit in outdoor conditions. The final value, which should be provided by the unit manufacturer (and it is not always the case) would be around 80 lm/W in the best of cases.
