The passage of the Queen is an architectural installation where so- lar energy creates a magical effect in the eyes of the spectator. “We are object and subject. Surfaces and observers”. With these words, Mexican architect Mónica Vega defines her luminous architectural installation, ‘El Paso de la Reina’, The passage of the Queen (namesake of the place for which it was created), that was exhibited at the ‘Palacio de la Autonomia de Ciudad de Mexico’, in 2017, and oper- ates with solar light and nothing else. Mónica works with natural light and concentrates in the reaction produced by solar light when it comes in contact with the surface of objects, which results in the transformation of the perceived space, color, light and darkness. In this way, at the passage of the Queen, the access to the sun’s rays is partially blocked. The surface that comes in contact with the sun’s light absorbs the light waves and reflects them and this relation absorbtion-reflection is what defines the color perceived by the observer. “My intention is to create effects that are generally creat- ed only through electrical light sources, questioning the use of technology in the arts and in architecure”, recaps the artist.
